THIS IS HUGE!!! AWS finally has launched infrastructure in India. AWS today announced the launch of CloudFront edge locations in Mumbai and Chennai. This gives significant benefits to Indian customers and it also feels like a first step towards setting up bigger infrastructure in India. We are super excited!!

What is a CloudFront edge location anyways?
Content today is delivered mostly through Content Delivery Networks (CDN). Imagine you have a global ecommerce site with customers in USA, Europe and Asia. You decide to host your website somewhere in Asia. Thus your American and European customers will get subpar performance as their requests has to come all the way to Asia to get serviced. Similarly if you decide to host in USA, Asian customers will get subpar performance. CDN solves this issue by having a host of “Edge Locations” throughout the globe. These edge locations work as caching points, which cache your content and deliver locally to the customers, thus significantly reducing the latency and improving performance for customers. Also as content is delivered locally and in a distributed fashion, it is exponentially more scalable compared to delivering content from a single location. CloudFront is a CDN service from AWS which is flexible and inexpensive (especially compared to the thousands of dollars that other CDN providers charge).

What is so great about having CloudFront edge locations in India?
So far Indian websites and applications that were using AWS had to use AWS infrastructure in Singapore (called Singapore Region). This essentially meant all the Indian users’ traffic was routed to Singapore and back. This induced undesirable latencies. With today’s announcement of edge locations in Mumbai and Singapore, AWS customers that uses CloudFront, will be able to take advantage of local edge locations and their customers will see significantly better performance. It will be a no-brainer for all the websites and applications targeted towards Indian customers to take advantage of this new development. If you are such website targeting Indian customers and not using CloudFront, this is your BIG reason to start using it. CloudFront also works with other provides so your can potentially keep using your hosting, and still use CloudFront.

Where can I know more about CDN and CloudFront?
You can know more about CloudFront at AWS website here. If you have further questions, feel free to post a comment below and I will answer it. We also have a AWS Certification Boot Camp – Level 3 course coming up which covers CloudFront in-depth. If you are interested to know more, please fill out this form.

CompTIA has launched certification exams for cloud computing called CompTIA Cloud Essentials exam (CLO-001). I recently appeared for the exam and I cleared it. CompTIA exam is very valuable to anybody trying to assess their understanding of what cloud computing is all about. This exam is truly unique as its vendor neutral and does not talk about a specific cloud offering.
This certification is your first step to achieving the tag of being a “cloud guru”. Clearing this exam means that you understand the business requirements, technical requirements and the various limitations of the cloud environment.
Why should professionals take CompTIA Cloud Essentials exam (CLO-001)
This exam is very important and increasingly relevant for any professional who wants to venture into cloud computing as a career option. Companies from startups to SMEs to big corporations like Netflix and Intuit are moving huge chunks of their infrastructure on the cloud. This makes this certification a valuable asset for any professional looking to distinguish themselves in this crowded market.

Who should take the CompTIA Cloud Essentials exam (CLO-001)
The CompTIA Cloud Essentials exam (CLO-001) is designed for IT specialists, IT managers, business process owners and business analysts. The objective of the exam is to test you on the cloud computing concepts and principles, the technical requirements and the technical limitations for adopting cloud computing. It also tests your knowledge on using ITIL standards to adopt cloud computing.
It is recommended that the candidates should have at least six months of working experience in an IT related service.

Objective of CompTIA Cloud Essentials exam (CLO-001)
CompTIA Cloud Essentials exam tests an individual’s knowledge cloud computing. It tests if an individual knows what cloud computing means and its impact on business and technical requirements. It also covers what is required to move your IT resources to cloud and what governs the cloud.
The exam was developed by IT entrepreneurs in association with the Cloud Credential Council. It is a vendor neutral training on cloud computing. Companies such as IBM, Cisco, EMC, HP and ING have contributed to the development of this exam.

Categorising the questions
The questions can be categorised into the following sections:

1. Characteristics of Cloud Services from a Business Perspective
The questions of this category are focused on your knowledge on various solutions that are available for cloud computing. It evaluates your understanding of what defines a service as a cloud service, the types of cloud services that are available in the market and the various deployment models. The questions try to evaluate if you understand what differentiates one model of cloud from that of another. You need to have a thorough understanding of what cloud computing entails. For example, you might be asked if a particular service is defined as SaaS, XaaS or IaaS.

2. Cloud Computing and Business Value
The questions in this category tests whether you are able to evaluate business situations which require cloud computing. You should be able to clearly define the type of businesses that can be migrated to cloud. You need to understand the impact of cloud on CAPEX and OPEX for a business. For example, you should be able to clearly understand the business needs of the organizations and the benefits of using cloud computing.

3. Technical Perspective/Cloud Types
This section deals with questions on the technical aspects of cloud computing. You should be able to define the need and the advantages of IT components such as network, storage and compute power used to form a cloud service. Also, you should be able to understand the limitations posed by these IT components. For example, you need to understand scenarios such as the effect of network outages in cloud and what type of storage should be used in private cloud. These questions do not deep dive into the technical implementations of cloud and is more high-level in nature.

4. Steps to Successful Adoption of Cloud Computing
This section lists the sequential steps to be followed for adopting cloud. You should be able to clearly define the steps, the tasks performed in each step and the success criteria for each step.

5. Impact and Changes of Cloud Computing on IT Service Management
In this section, you are evaluated on your knowledge on ITIL and its implementation in cloud computing. The questions are usually simple and are focused on which process and what phase you would be in if you are doing a particular task. For example, you may be asked in what phase would be you be creating a Service Portfolio for your cloud service.

6. Risks and Consequences of Cloud Computing
Questions from this section evaluate your knowledge on the risks of using cloud computing and its impact on your business.

ANSWERS:-

Answer 1: Option 1,2 and 4

Option 1: is correct as cloud computing is ideal for start-up businesses. It saves time and cost for organizations. It enables you to be productive in less time.

Option 2: is correct as cloud provides inexpensive and abundant resources. Governments can use cloud to move information that needs to be available to general public.

Option 4: is also correct as large organizations stand to benefit greatly from cloud computing. Moving to cloud will enable large organization to manage their IT demands more effectively.

Note:-Option 3: is not the most suitable answer. While moving your data to cloud, you need to verify the nature of the data. If the information is very critical from security point of view, you probably may not want to move that to cloud without due diligence.

Answer 2: Option 3

Think of “infrastructure” as a substitute to all things “hardware” .Hence, the correct answer is 3.

Answer 3: Option 2,3 and 4

Option 2: It’s extremely important to encrypt your data being transmitted to and from cloud. Hence, option 2 is the right answer.

Option 3: It’s important to ensure that your cloud provider is adhering to the SLAs agreed upon and is protecting the cloud infrastructure appropriately.

Option 4: You need to check the data integrity of your application regularly to check if your data is secure and that it has not been compromised.

Answer 4: Option 1

Answer 5: Option 1

Answer 6: Option 2

Option 2: The most appropriate answer is option 2 because the mantra of cloud computing is “pay-per-use”. So the more you use resources on cloud, the more you pay and as you start using less, you pay less.

Answer 7: Option 3

Your organizations may have either NAS or SAN storage. However, in cloud you need to consolidate your resources and make it usable for your organization from a holistic point of view. Hence, the most appropriate answer is option 3.

Answer 8: Option 1

One of the biggest advantages of using cloud computing is that you do not need a huge capital to invest in your IT infrastructure. You can pay as you use.

Answer 9: Option 3

The correct option is 3. You should consider automating tasks that are repetitive such as provisioning machines or creating new user accounts and so on.

I am sure that you have already heard about the next generation of MapReduce proposed by Hadoop. Its popularly called MapReduce2 or MR2.

With MR2 they are introducing many enhancements, the prime one being introduction of a new component called YARN (Yet Another Resource Negotiator).
With the current MapReduce implementation, there is just one Job Tracker that takes care of two critical functions:

Manage resources across the cluster and schedule jobs using that information.

Keep track of job execution. This includes rerunning failed nodes, job check-pointing, etc.

In YARN, the Job Tracker goes away and each of these two tasks are given to two different components.

Resource Manager

There is one Resource Manager per Hadoop Cluster and is responsible for scheduling jobs. It has the state information about all the nodes and thus it can make smarter scheduling decisions.

Application Master

There is one Application Master (AM) per job. Resource Manager schedules one AM per job, and once that is done, its AM’s responsibility to successfully complete the execution of the job. This takes away a lot of responsibility from the Resource Manager, and thus it can scale to many more nodes in the cluster and many more jobs.

Few points to know about this new architecture are:

Application Master aggressively writes check-pointing state to HDFS and thus load on HDFS increases. This application state is used for job recovery; if Application Master fails a job can be restarted from the last checkpoint.

The Task Node is replaced by NodeManager (More about this in future blog). There is an option to write Node Manager log to HDFS. Thus logs can go to a central place and debugging will be easier. This will further stress the HDFS cluster.

Yarn no longer just works with MapReduce. It can work with other distributed computing platform.

Yahoo introduced Storm: A Real time distributed computing platform. Open Source by Yahoo!!

This version also introduces Web services for Hadoop Cluster status. No longer you need to scrape web pages to automate stuff.

What is Big data? It is definitely the most talked of ‘new kid on the block’ in the analytics fraternity . Everyone seems to be talking about it . So what exactly is Big data ?

Big data consists of data sets that grow so large that they become ‘difficult / awkward’ to work with using existing database management systems (Oracle, Sybase, MySQL, Teradata etc.). Difficulties include capture, storage, search, sharing, and mining the data for analytics. With an explosion in sources of data – internet forms, cookies , sensors , mobile applications , satellite data etc., the quantum on data is growing and will continue to grow at an astronomical pace. The cost of storage of data is reducing exponentially too . The cost of a 4 GB pen drive is now 10% of what it was a couple of years ago. Coupled together, these two trends will fuel the growth in quantum of data that we will have access to .

The world’s technological per capita capacity to store information has roughly doubled every 40 months since the 1980s (about every 3 years) . Some people say it is no wgoing to double every 1.5 years. Every day 2.5 quintillion bytes of data is created.

As you can visualize, these new sources of data will mostly be non-relational data and the storage is in non-relational DBMS. Thus, transactional data within an organization will, bynecessity, be in the traditional relational database while there is this ‘other’ data which is where there will be maximum growth .This ‘other’ data will need to be mined and put into MIS and reports, analyzed for trends and used to create probability equations.

This ‘other’ data is generally called Big data .

(Source :-https://connollyshaun.blogspot.in/)

As systems and processes stabilize and mature on capture and storage of Big Data, the focus is shifting to ‘WHAT NEXT’?

Logically, the next step is to mine the data for information – business intelligence and Analytics.

I will specifically look at Apache Hadoop in this context .HadoopMapReduce is a software framework for easily writing applications which process vast amounts of data (multi-terabyte data-sets) in-parallel on large clusters (thousands of nodes) of commodity hardware in a reliable, fault-tolerant manner.

Many vendors that have caught the Hadoop bug and released versions of the software such as Cloudera, HortonWorks, Microsoft with HDInsight.

Cloudera’sHadoop schematic diagram

Sounds simple , but for a data analyst with no Java coding skills , it is all latin and greek . Until you take a look at Pig – high-level platform for creating MapReduce programs used with Hadoop. The language for this platform is called Pig Latin. It abstracts the programming from the Java MapReduce idiom into a notation which makes MapReduce programming high level, similar to that of SQL for RDBMS systems. High Level language is very close to natural language and spoken English , thus making it very user friendly for the non – coder .

Wow ..thismakes life so much better for data analysts . And enables us Analysts to look forward to many more projects where we will effectively crunch ‘Big Data ‘ .

Software that competes with Hadoop is Google’s BigQuery. And the comparisons between these two giants is a story for another day . But in the real world out there, Hadoop is the current favorite Big Data Management and Analysis system .

Interesting aside :- Apache Hadoop is an open-source software framework that supports data-intensive distributed applicationsHadoop is written in the Java programming language Hadoop was created by Doug Cutting and Mike Cafarella and Doug named it after his son’s toy elephant !! All parts of the Hadoop framework have names commonly found in a Zoo J.

One of the common thoughts in the minds of the new MBA is – how will my typical work day span out ? What will I be doing for 8 hours a day , 40 hours a week if I were to make a career in Analytics?

Analytics is a relatively ‘young’ area of work. It has evolved and expanded 100 fold in the last 10 years as more and more companies and their top managements have become convinced about the immense value it adds to decision making. In this increasingly complex marketplace, where net and mobile technologies are adding into the conventional brick and mortar economy, and the life of data is becoming short (i.e., data which is very old is not usable), analytics is becoming increasingly useful and moving from the fringes towards the mainstream w.r.t business decisions. This, of course, spells increased requirement for analytics talent. It also increases the responsibility of success and failure to correct and timely decisions made using analytics. In short, the analyst (used loosely to define the analytics fraternity) has many choices in the workplace and can decide which role to play in his career.

Broadly the roles can be segregated into

Individual Contributor – Subject matter expert (IC -SME) role

Team Manager role

Individual Contributor – Subject matter expert (IC -SME) role :- As the name signifies, an Individual contributor works by himself and may not have a team reporting into him . He would typically be an expert on a particular subject/s or line of work (eg. web analytics and using it for marketing campaigns, modelling for Loss given default etc.). He may also be a specialist in some software – hadoop / SAS e- Miner etc. He would work on projects across teams in an advisory role and would interact with the client as and when required. Exploring paths to improve a project would form a large part of his job . He will have to keep abreast with happenings in his area of specialization in his industry as well as in other related industries. A keen brain, exploratory nature and love of his work would be the hallmarks of an SME IC.

Team Manager role :- A team manager would be spending equal parts of his day between client management, team handling and other organizational duties (budgeting, planning, recruitment, training etc.). His knowledge of analytics would be sound peppered with practical ways to execute projects, optimize outputs and ensure client satisfaction with the given resource constraints. A typical ‘manager’, he will be juggling multiple deliverables and playing different roles in the day. A person in this role can rise up to become the CEO, COO etc. of an Analytics firm. He also have scope to move into consulting and have a practical idea of implementing the analytics output. The higher he rises, the less of hands-on analytics comes his way. His goals would include business acquisition targets. These roles are more plentiful than the IC- SME role discussed above.

Thus , as many pure BPOs move into analytics and become KPOs , the requirement for analytics talent will increase. In my view, analytics is a skill and people with any background, with a head for numbers and a conviction in the power of decision making by numbers, will find this to be a field after their own heart . It covers nearly all streams of work within an organization – HR, Operations, Marketing, Sales, IT , Supply chain management, Logistics– and hence, the choice of the team that you decide to join for analytics can be aligned to your area of interest of specializations and study.

Cloud computing has arrived and it is time now to welcome the change with open arms before the phenomenon starts looming like a dark cloud waiting to break into a storm over the unprepared.

There is a general indecisiveness over shifting entirely to the cloud. This is fueled by factors which if identified seem like a weak basis to make decisions upon. Some of them are:

Employees working on legacy spaghetti who have little or no awareness of how cloud works or sense a threat to job security if their employers shift to cloud computing

Top Management don’t have examples to follow and study in terms of resource utilization efficiency, cost minimization and improvement in data security.

The non existence of a standardized procedure for implementation of the cloud, undefined legalities and regulations.

The general lack of understanding and knowledge in terms of what the cloud is, how it works, how data is stored without having a specific physical location.

If these can be called disadvantages the advantages overcome them many times over. An interesting info-graphic from wikibon below can help us see that.

The ramifications of delaying moving to cloud will be severe as when cloud takes over, and it will, there will be too much to do in too little a time. It is just a matter of time which moves really fast in the world of technology.

The biggest shocker is the fact that most of us work in the cloud everyday. Web services like Facebook, Gmail, DropBox, Apple iCloud, LinkedIn, Disqus, Salesforce, Amazon Webservices, Hotmail, Box.Net, Twitter and many more are already being used by companies and employees around the globe.

THE CLOUD COMPUTING STRATOSPHERE

Therefore as proponents of the new movement it is necessary not only to encourage businesses to start training their personnel who are currently only comfortable using conventional systems but also work towards hiring cloud trained personnel.

At the same time it is important to educate and spread awareness among the top management regarding the simplicity of the structure, the advantages in terms of security and resource utilization and to develop at least a partly standardized process to make the move from legacy spaghetti to the cloud. The most important variable that might impress them might be the extent to which cloud can positively affect their margins.

Get yourself and your team trained on Cloud Computing increasing your knowledge beyond here-say, discuss your scenarios with an expert. Take an informed decision. https://training.cloudthat.com/courses/courses-offered/

So you want to work with an IBM, HP, Accenture, Genpact etc. in the latest field of ‘Analytics’ or ‘Data Science’ and you want to be absolutely sure if this is the career for you ? Check out these 5 questions that you should answer to make this decision .( If you have a YES for 3 out of these 5 questions and an OK for 2, then Analytics is a viable the career option for you .)

Do you believe that data should be the basis of all decisions? :- Take up Analytics only if your answer to this questions is an unequivocal YES . Analytics is the process of using and analysing large quantum of data (numbers, text, images etc.) to aggregate it , visualise / create dashboards on it , check repetitive trends and create models on which decision scan be made . And only people who innately believe in the power of data will excel in this field. Incase some prediction / analysis is wrong , the attitude of a good analyst is that it is because the data was not appropriate for that analysis or the technique used was incorrect . He/ she will never doubt that a correct decision will be made if the relevant data and appropriate technique is used.

Do you like to constantly learn new stuff?:- Take up Analytics only if your answer to this questions is an unequivocal YES .Analytics is a new field . There is a constant increase in the avenues of data , currently w.r.t internet data , social networking information, mobile transaction data , near field communication devices . And there is a constant change in technology to store, process and analyse this data .Hadoop, Google updates etc. have become increasingly important. Cloud computing and data management is common now. Economic cycles have shortened and model building has become more frequent as older models get redundant. Eleven the humble excel has an Analysis Toolpak in Excel 2010 which has statistical functions. Be ready for change .

Do you like to interpret outcomes and then track it to see if your recommendations were right?:- Take up Analytics only if your answer to this questions is an unequivocal YES .A data analyst will work on a project . The implementation of the recommendations will generally be valid for a reasonably long period of time of perhaps a year or even 3-5 years. A good analyst should be interested to know how accurate has been his understanding of the outcomes and should want to track the performance periodically. HE/she should ideally also be the first person to be able to say when the analysis is not working and needs to be re-worked.

Are you ready to go back to a text book and brush up / pick up concepts of maths and statistics ?:- Take up Analytics only if your answer to this questions is an unequivocal YES . To accurately handle data and interpret results you will need to learn / brush up concepts of maths and statistics. It becomes very important to justify why you choose a particular path during analysis vs. others. The business users do not accept your word blindly.

Do you like debating and logical thinking?:-Take up Analytics only if your answer to this questions is an unequivocal YES . As there is no one solution to all problems, an analyst has to choose the best way to handle the project / problem in hand. He has to be able to not only know the best way to analyse the data but also give the best way in the given time constraints and budget constraints. This sector generally has a very open culture where the analyst working on a project / problem will be required to give his inputs irrespective of his position in the hierarchy.

Do check your answers to the questions above . If you have a YES for 3 out of these 5 questions and an OK for 2, then Analytics is a viable the career option for you . Welcome to the world of Analytics !!

Analytics is simply the use of numbers to decide on business problems / situations. Thus, in a world where there are huge ERP systems, Internet information, Mobile apps etc. there is a large volume of data that is created and stored by an organisation . The old way of work was – if you need to make a decision, call the person who has experience in that area and take his advice. Was it the best way? Perhaps not, because human beings develop biases basis the atmosphere / situations / education they have been subject to. Also, it has been found that though a human being can effectively judge the effect of one factor on an outcome, he /she finds it difficult when the number of factors are many and the data is huge. Better decisions are made with the use of statistical techniques which allow us to work on the data and come to a conclusion.

The next question often is – So what is the type of ‘use of numbers’ that we are talking about? Will I have to sit and do maths again?

The last decade has seen the advent of SaaS (Software as a service) in all walks of Information gathering and manipulation . Thus, Analytics systems now are button driven systems which do the calculations and throw up the results . An Analyst or Data Scientist has to look at these results and conclude / make recommendations for the business to implement. For example, an ICICI bank wants to sell loans in the market. It has data of all customers who have taken loans from it over the last 20 years . The portfolio is of , say , 1 crore loans . It now wants to understand which customers should it give a pre-approved loan offer.

The simplest answer may be – all the customers who paid up on time every time in the earlier loans. Let us call this set of customers Segment A .But on analysis you may find that customers who defaulted but paid up after default actually made more money for the bank because they paid Interest + Late payment charges. Let us call this set Segment B .

Hence, you can now say that you want to send out the offer to Customer A + B.

However, within Segment B there was a set of customers who you had to send Collections teams to their house to collect the money. So they paid Interest + Late payment charges- Collection cost . This set is Segment C.

So you may then decide to target Customers A+B –C.

You could do this exercise using Decision Tree software which cut your data into segments for you .

The last question that we will tackle in this article is – What does the work day of an Analytics professional look like ?

A typical work day may look like the following :-

He will walk into the office and be told about the problem that the business needs his inputs on

He will determine which is the best way to solve the problem

He will then gather the relevant data from the large datasets stored in the server

Next, he will import the data into the analytics system

He will run the technique thru the software (SAS, SPSS, XLSTAT etc.)

The software will produce the relevant output

He will study the output and prepare a report with his recommendations

This will be discussed with the business

The companies which recruit large teams in Analytics include TCS, Accenture (Mumbai), McKinsey Knowledge Centre (Gurgaon) , Genpact (Bangalore and Gurgaon) , Novartis (Hyderabad) , Dell (Bangalore), Capital One (Bangalore ), Capgemini (Mumbai) etc. It is expected that there will be a shortage of Analytics resources in the world (and India) in the next decade.

Subhashini Sharma Tripathi
